Flip Video Ultra works in Ubuntu.

Flip Video Linux
The Flip Video Ultra works great in linux. The device is mounted as a USB mass storage device. The videos are avi files encoded in mpeg4. Just drag and drop. Use Totem or mplayer to play. Very nice.

I am also using the flip video ultra on Ubuntu Gutsy. Playing on my pc is great, but I'm trying to get output to mpeg format, or burned to dvd that my dvd player can play. Have you tried anything aside from playing video on your computer? I would be interested to hear about your results.
thanks,

I am thinking of purchasing a flip video ultra. I can't find any info on their site about using it with a linux machine. I have the Eee pc which runs Xandros. Where did you find the software t ru it on linux?

thanks

I am not using any software, Linux mounts it as a drive and I can then copy the videos from the camera to my computer. I have uploaded to youtube.com without problem, but I must admit,I have not done much editing of them.

I have had some success with Kino, but I really just use the Flip as a point and shoot.

What version of Ubuntu were you using?
I ordered the flip ultra from Amazon (best price). It will arrive today. I have an old Dell laptop with Breezy Badger on it. I'm hoping that it will mount as a drive also.

I tried using my Flip Ultra on the Aspire One with Linux. It finds the camera and software, but when I click on the flipvideo.exe file nothing happens. Is there something else I need to do to play and/or upload the video from the camcorder.

You don't need to use the .exe, that is for installing the associated software under Windows. Just use Nautalis or whatever file manager you use and browse to the drive that gets mounted. With any new distro I would expect it to mount the camera and show you a shortcut on the desktop.

There's no problem with the Flip getting mounted. It shows up in the File Manager. I can't figure how to open it from there. No icons are added to the desktop menu and the AA1 Master Media Player doesn't list anything in it's video selections.

Files copy and upload nicely with Ubuntu Intrepid on my Eee PC 701. However, I can't find a way to edit them, or even to trim them. mencoder and ffmpeg both look like they're doing the right thing, but the result always ends up silent, or at best has a brief blip of noise at the start. (Kino might be useful in theory, but I can't get the interface to behave on the Eee's small screen.) I suspect that 3ivx may be doing something odd with respect to encoding sound, but that's just a guess. Has anyone had any more success or insight?

Yes, fine, but you can't EDIT the files in Ubuntu, unless you convert them, losing frames.

I have a flip and Ubuntu. Post if you have an answer.
